Pioneering progress: Keppel Seghers’ 50-year quest for a sustainable future

For half a century, Keppel Seghers has been a pioneer and innovator in environmental engineering. The company started as Seghers Engineering NV in 1974, with a vision of creating and delivering solutions for waste management, water treatment, and renewable energy, making the world a cleaner and greener place.

    When it all started

    Founded on September 11, 1974, Seghers Engineering NV initially focused on the Belgian market, successfully installing wastewater treatment plants in Louvain and Bruges as its inaugural projects.
  • 1970s

    The first-generation of air-cooled moving grates for waste incineration

    In the 1970s, the company developed the first-generation of air-cooled moving grates for waste incineration, the HARDpelletiser technology for sludge drying, and the ZEROFUEL technology for sludge combustion, setting new standards for efficiency and sustainability.

  • 1980

    Waste-to-Energy

    Seghers Engineering NV’s first Waste-to-Energy plant, built in Wilrijk over 40 years ago, remains operational to this day. Additionally, in the 1980s and 1990s, the company expanded its divisions and technologies by acquiring Unitank, Rotary Atomiser, and DANO technologies.

    New technologies

    In the 1980s, the company established its headquarters in Willebroek and expanded its global footprint with projects in the United States, China, Japan, and Macau. It also acquired new technologies such as the UNITANK technology for biological wastewater treatment, the ROTARY ATOMISER technology for flue gas cleaning, and the DANO drum technology for waste recycling and pre-treatment, enhancing its capabilities and competitiveness.

    Rebranding

    Seghers Engineering NV  rebranded as Seghers Better Technology Group NV in the 1990s and entered the international market with projects in China, Macau, Japan, and South Korea.
  • 1996

    New headquarters

    Keppel Seghers Belgium - Old Lamot Brewery
    The headquarters moved to the old Lamot brewery. An historic building with a rich history and today a protected monument.

  • 2002

    Merger

    Seghers Better Technology NV merged with Singapore-based Keppel Corporation, forming the Seghers Keppel Technology Group.
  • 2002 - 2010

    Landmark projects

    The company completed several landmark projects, such as the Mokdong waste-to-energy plant in South Korea and the Runcorn waste-to-energy plant in the UK, the largest combined heat and power plant in Europe, showcasing its expertise and innovation.

    Continuous innovation

    Keppel Seghers Belgium - PolandThe company continued to innovate and deliver environmental solutions, such as the Bialystok waste-to-energy plant in Poland, the first waste-to-energy plant in the country, achieving new milestones and accolades.

    Since its inception in May 2013, Keppel Seghers NV has established itself as a leader in environmental management, completing over 100 waste-to-energy projects across more than 25 countries, delivering comprehensive solutions for solid waste.

    Eighty Thousand - 80K

    80K Bees at KSBEWe welcomed 80,000 new employees to our company. Our hardworking bees on the rooftop provide us with some delicious honey harvests every year. While doing so, they preserve the local ecosystem by pollinating plants and flowers, contributing to biodiversity in urban spaces. This aligns with our commitment to environmental sustainability, as these bees are vital indicators of ecological health.

    Keppel Seghers - One KeppelWe celebrated 20 years Keppel Seghers together with our Singaporese colleagues and our CEO Mr Loh.

    One Keppel

    On January 1st, 2024, Keppel Seghers became part of Keppel Ltd, an integrated company. This merger will enable us to work towards our common goal of investing in sustainable solutions for the future.

    In the upcoming years, we will play a pivotal role in our journey towards Vision 2030, where we aim to become a global asset manager and operator, dedicated to crafting sustainable solutions for the future.
